Playing In The Wind

There is enough stress and anxiety in a tournament that you really don't need the additional challenge of a windy day. But there it is, and your first thought is that your day is ruined.

Well, if that is what you believe, then it is likely to happen. Bu there is a better way, both mentally and physically.

Remember that the wind will affect BOTH sides, so neither of you is at a distinct disadvantage.

If you are playing WITH the wind, then it is like the court is 2-4 feet shorter. Be more careful with your serves, returns, and all drives to keep them on the court. I find that if I hit them lower than usual, I can still get pretty good speed.

Any balls coming at you will be shorter than usual, especially drop shots and higher drives. So make an effort to move up on these shots until you figure out the effect of the wind.

This is also a good time to watch the ball a little longer - maybe keep your eyes on it at least until it bounces and reaches the apex.

If you are playing INTO the wind, then you will need to hit the ball harder while maintaining control and accuracy - sometimes a tough task. Your soft drops will definitely need to be hit longer to get over the net.
Balls coming at you are going to carry further and head off the court more often, so don't be in a rush to intercept them, especially long lobs.

Treat the wind like any other challenge that you can adjust for, and definitely do not let it get into your head.

Have a great day on the courts.
