3-2-1-Whack
I was watching a friend occasionally struggle with his serve today and I noticed that the calling of the score and his actual serve were very closely tied together. He had established a rhythm where he started calling the score as he started moving into the serve. Most of the time this worked, but if he changed anything in the routine even slightly, his serve was all over the place. Of course, I then noticed that a lot of people have fallen into this routine as well.
So I asked my friend to call the score, then pause to take a breath, and then to actually serve. Things improved immediately - he was more relaxed during the actual serve, he was better focused on the right thing at the right time, and his serves were much more consistent.
So play close attention to your own serve and make sure that calling the score is completely separate from serving.
See you on the courts.
